Mrs. Mom: Makin' Memories

There's a phrase that our district uses when talking about student data and performance:

Who's not achieving? Why not? And what are you going to do about it?

It's the SO WHAT? factor.  As a teacher, I could spend all day sulking about my babies that aren't achieving.  I could give a million and a half reasons why they aren't achieving.  It's quite depressing to think about, actually.  But thankfully, that's not where it ends.  Thankfully, there's the SO WHAT?? That two word question forces me out of my depression.  It's convicting.  It forces me to think.  It forces me to be creative.  It forces me to try innovative strategies.  It forces me to see that child {or children!} as an individual.  It forces me to bank on their promise and not their problems.  It forces me to be a better teacher.

"So what?" is a powerful question for me as a teacher.  But it's also becoming a powerful question for me as a mommy too...

When I was a kid, my parents planned this family movie night.  We rented this new, award winning movie on {{{VHS}}}, Babe.  5 minutes in to the movie and we all knew it was awful.  But my parents made us watch it anyways.  My brother and I rolled our eyes about it and spent the next hour and 33 minutes in misery.  When we complained to my parents, my dad just said, "SO WHAT? We're makin' memories!"  ...ugh...and if he said it once during my childhood, he said it 15 gazillion times...

But almost 20 years later we still laugh about it.   Dad was right.  No matter what the circumstances are...we are just makin' memories together...

Fast forward to today.

It's snow day #11 at our house {I think....I've sorta lost count at this point...}  3 in a row this week.  This is the view out my front door.  Can't see the road? Yeah, me either...

The 2-years-ago-me would have rolled my eyes about so many snow days, posted about my stinky life and how my summer is disappearing, whined to my friends and family about it, begged for spring to come, and grown an ulcer in my stomach from worrying about how I'm going to be able to make up all of the learning we've missed in first grade.

But the this-year-me thinks, SO WHAT?  We are just makin' memories.

Oh, there are lots of things to complain about...

Like going to school on a Saturday {and probably 2 before winter is over}. SO WHAT? Going on a Saturday means less time I go in June.

Like losing almost half of my spring break for make up days.  SO WHAT? I got an 11 day "Snow Break" and I still get 3 days off in March.

Like going to school for at least a week in June {and maybe more before winter is over}.  SO WHAT? My summer is getting shorter, but it's still going to be about 9 weeks long. 9 weeks. That's 9 weeks longer of a summer than Mr. gets.

Like the fact that there are 3 more days of *S*N*O*W* in my 10 day forecast.

Like having cabin fever and beginning to wonder if the sun even exists....and I could go on.

But SO WHAT? When summer break is here and this crazy string of snow days is over, all I'm going to be left with are the memories that I made.  SO WHAT am I going to do about it?

I'm gonna be makin' memories no matter what, so I'm determined that the memories we make are going to be GOOD ones!

It's 7:45am and the radar is actually clear for today.  But wait...it's snowing and HARD! So 7:45 or not, Cooper and I went outside to get snowed on! Makin' memories...

 "Mommy, it's snowing!!"
Makeup free and all...:)

Time to weigh-in just like Daddy does every morning.  He wants to be like Daddy so bad! Makin' memories...

Pretending a knob on a puzzle piece or a megablock is a paci {since Mommy is mean and only lets me have them at nap time!} Makin' memories...

Staying warm inside and playing blocks. Makin' memories....
 Uh-oh!

Sorting bears by color in the middle of the kitchen floor while Mommy makes breakfast...and he's pretty good at it for a 16 month old! Makin' memories...

 Oh no!!

Getting to see my 16 month old point out 8 shapes by himself.  Makin' memories...

Getting to watch Daddy sing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" with Cooper.  Makin' memories...

Don't have snow boots or water proof gloves to go outside a play in the snow? SO WHAT? Bring the snow inside and play instead.  Makin' memories...
Wait for it, wait for it...
CRASH!!!

Look who's building a snowman! "Ssss, sss, sss!"
Poor Frosty's corn kernel eyes wouldn't stay...But we did manage to get his tomato hat, baby carrot nose, yarn scarf, toothpick arms and chocolate chip buttons to stay!
...until little fingers got after Frosty...
Let's all take a moment for the airplane we hear flying over us, shall we?
Uh-oh...somebody's wearing their guilty face!

How can I complain about a snow day when I get to have this much fun??  Sure we are COOPed up inside for most of the day. Sure I'm #snOVERit.  Sure it's hard staring at the same walls all.day.long. but SO WHAT? We are making the best of it! We are makin' memories!
